Presentation Reflection PLN#3

While listening to presentations the last couple of days there was one that really got my attention. This topic had to do with suicide, and whether or not teens should be exposed to suicide related items on the Internet. This topic is relevant to me because one of our very close family friends has suffered from their sons suicide. It is so sad and I feel terribly for the family we love them so much and support them with everything we have. Teen suicide is awful and it happens way too often in fact it shouldn't be happening at all. From this presentation I have learned that a lot of teens view suicide web sights and that is where they tend to get their ideas from. I agree with the presenters thesis that teens should not be allowed to be viewing this kind of content because it only widens their thoughts. This makes me wonder with every teen suicide how many of them actually viewed content like this on the Internet before killing themselves. I think that other people should care and pay more attention to this topic. Also I think that parents need to be more aware of what their children are viewing on the Internet these days. Teen suicide can be prevented, and we need to protect teens from content on the Internet.

Poverty

As I researched issues around the world I discovered that there are so many terrible things happening out there. One that I came across and that stood out to me is poverty. Honestly with out any explanation just the word poverty makes my body cringe. The first thing that popped into my head was young African children that are starving around our world. I have researched a little further into this topic, a few statistics are that twenty five thousand people including children die everyday from hunger or hunger related causes. This is one person every three and a half seconds. I want to share this web page with you. I have found it very resourceful. http://www.worldhunger.org/articles/Learn/world%20hunger%20facts%202002.htm I don't think at any point that any one should have to feel the pain of starving for food or having absolutely no energy causing you to not be able to do anything. There is enough food in this world for everyone and I think that communities need to work together to get that food to those places in our world that need it. From this website we can see in the pie graph that most of the hunger (poverty) is not in the United States. The United States has never really experienced the kind of hunger and poverty that Africa has for example. There is not one advantage from such a situation like poverty, everything and anything about it is absolutely wrong! There is one thing that I am very thankful for and that is the organizations we have that create food drives and anything that they can to help these kind of people. I have a lot of respect for the people that have created organizations like these. I think it is the only right thing that anyone could do. Now how do we continue to climb the rope in stopping poverty?
